New skills and new friendships on rugby tour to Madrid

David Kilcoyne, Head of Rugby at Desborough College in Maidenhead in the UK took his Year 8 and 9 rugby squads on tour to Madrid. He escaped the drones and tells us here how the boys came back with new skills, new friendships and a renewed interest in the sport.

“Going on tour created a real buzz; it was the first time many of the boys had played abroad and they learnt so much about themselves and the sport.

“We tour for the enjoyment, the experience and because it really helps maintain the interest in the sport. It gives us something to aim for throughout the season and keeps the boys active outside of school time.

“The coaching sessions on tour are great; getting this much quality time for training all in one go is rare. The matches are great too, but the real highlight for me was watching the friendships develop between two year groups, who wouldn’t otherwise have much contact back at school. It was lovely to see them support each other during the matches.

“The boys loved the tour of Bernabeu Stadium, especially the trophy room. I had seen it when we did the inspection visit there in October half term.

“Seeing all their trophies lined up was a real thrill and a great finish to our tour."
