Your tour is based around Ypres, enabling exploration of the Flanders fields as well as the Somme battlefields in France. Almost entirely destroyed during the 1914-1918 War, Ypres has been rebuilt stone by stone to its former glory. The moving Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate, In Flanders Fields Museum and many other attractions make Ypres an ideal base for those groups with an interest in the battlefields or poets of the First World War. You will also visit Brussels, a vibrant and exciting city, home to the European Union, and the Somme region of France to make this a thoroughly enriching tour.

Trips - Ypres Salient

  • In Flanders Fields Museum: an amazing interactive museum, which shows how the war affected this town and its community
  • Allied cemeteries of which there are over 160 such as Essex Farm and Tyne Cot (Passchendaele) 11,956 soldiers are buried here and it is the largest British Military Cemetery in the world
  • German cemeteries such as Langemark, which contains the bodies of more than 40,000 German troops, half of whom lie in a mass grave
  • Watch the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate where 50 000 missing soldiers are commemorated every evening at 8 o’clock and visit St George’s Memorial Church
  • Visit Sanctuary Wood (Hill 62) with its authentic trenches and museum, housing artefacts and photographs from the War
  • Passchendaele Memorial Museum: pictures, films, artefacts and dioramas bring the 1917 battle back to life

Trips - Somme

  • Visit numerous cemeteries and monuments such as Hooge Crater, Newfoundland Memorial Park, The Welsh Memorial at Mametz Wood and Ulster Tower, which marks the site against which the men of Ulster advanced on 1st July 1916
  • Thiepval Memorial & Visitor Centre, the largest memorial to the British and Irish missing on the Western Front, containing the names of 73,412 men who died from 1915 to 1917 and have no known graves.
  • Visit the Historiale de la Grande Guerre in Peronne, which with displays and films, shows what life was like for soldiers in the front line trenches, and also how they lived behind the trench lines
  • Visit Delville Wood Museum, Longueval: re-named ‘Devil’s Wood by the troops, this is South Africa’s major memorial to its dead of WWI.

Where to stay

You will be based at a hostel in a great location for your group on a full-board basis. Close to the many memorials of Ypres Salient, you will relax in comfort with students in multi-bed rooms and adults in singles. Such hostels include the Peace Village and De Iep, are both a short drive from Ypres.

Sample Itinerary

Day One

Travel to Brussels by air, transfer to your accommodation in Ypres. Time to explore the local area.

Day Two

Enjoy a morning visit to In Flanders Fields Museum, followed by lunch in Ypres and a guided Battlefields tour. In the evening enjoy a Guided Walk of Remembrance at the Peace Village.

Day Three

Spend your day visiting various memorials and museums close to Ypres – Hooge Crater, Tyne Cot and Talbot House. After an early dinner in the town centre, walk to the Menin Gate to watch the moving Last Post Ceremony.

Day Four

A day trip to Brussels will allow your students to see more of the country they are visiting. Various landmarks can be visited, such as the Manneken Pis and the Grand Place.

Day Five

A day in Bruges to include a visit to a chocolate shop, a cruise on the canal and a cycled guided visit of the town in the afternoon.

Day Six

Enjoy a day at a Theme Park. Entrance to Bellewaerde Park is included – with six themed lands, animals and many rides, your day will be memorable and exciting.

Day Seven

Enjoy a day spent in the Ypres region, with visits to Langemark German Cemetery, Paaschendale Memorial Museum and Hill 60 giving your students a different perspective of WWI.

Day Eight

Check out of your accommodation and transfer to Brussels Airport for your return flight.
