As this year’s amazing ski season finally draws to a close, you may be planning your school ski trip for Easter 2019. But when you look at the calendar will your reaction be one of dismay? Easter itself isn’t until the 22nd of April meaning that most schools won’t break up until Friday 5th April.

Far too late to go skiing?

If moving to February half-term isn’t an option (and we wouldn’t necessarily recommend it!), there is a still a lot you can do to ensure your Easter ski trip is a success.

Go high and stay there: this is the most popular and seemingly sensible decision. Choose a resort such as Obertauern, which at 3,000 metres above sea level, guarantees skiing until the end of May.

Find a glacier and quickly: with the lure of permanent snow and ice fields glittering all year round, choosing a resort such as Kaprun might make the most sense.

BUT don’t forget the rest of the world, or at least certainly those tied to school holidays, will be making the same decision. Accommodation will sell out. Lift passes won’t be reduced as Easter will be considered part of the main season. The runs will be busy with queues at the lifts!

So what can you do?

Low-lying ski resorts all over Europe have invested billions of Euros in their snow-making facilities in order to guarantee a long ski season in the face of climate change. 2018 demonstrated their success and 2019 will really show how this has paid off. Kitzbühel, a typically low altitude Austrian resort has achieved a prolonged season with good quality snow and majority of runs staying open, winning the Best Ski Resort in the World award in 2018 for the 6th year running.

The Salzburger Sportwelt has also dedicated resources to this challenge so that “with the help of our snow-making facilities, enough snow will be produced to keep the resort open until 22nd April” (Stefanie Lackner, Snowspace lift company).

All the other benefits of Easter student skiing, such as cheaper prices, fewer queues and a wide choice of accommodation still apply, as well as enjoying that all-important week to recover before school starts again.

Graham, a party leader from a school in Bucks is a great believer in Easter ski trips. Summing up his week in Saalbach-Hinterglemm this Easter, he said it was, “Fantastic, the experience the students and staff had was outstanding..we have since had lots of praise from parents”.

We at Club Europe have long been champions of Easter skiing for school groups and we believe that it will still be a positive and viable option for 2019! Enquire online or call us on Freephone 0800 496 4996 for a no obligation chat to explore your options.
