Pécs is the fifth largest city in Hungary, located on the slopes of the Mecsek mountains in the south-west of the country, close to its border with Croatia. A multicultural city, it is blessed with a mild climate, an illustrious past and a number of fine museums and monuments. Dominating the main square (Széchényi square), is the 16th-century Pasha Gazi Kassim Mosque. It is the largest building from the time of the Turkish occupation still standing in Hungary.
The Zsolnay Porcelain Museum traces the history of the porcelain factory established here in 1853, which remained at the forefront of European art and design for more than half a century. Many of its maiolica tiles were used to decorate buildings throughout Budapest and contributed to establishing a new pan-Hungarian style of architecture.
Take part in a fantastic champagne tour in Hungary’s oldest champagne factory. While wandering about in the 2.5-km-long cellar-labyrinth, learn about all aspects of champagne, its history and making. Enjoy a champagne tasting at the end of the tour or grab a torch and venture into the dark and creepy underground passages on a special tour.
This 18th century castle is one of the best preserved castles in the country and the residence of many prominent historical families. Rebuilt several times, it shows Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. In addition to the town history exhibition, visitors can also see Gádor István ceramist’s works and a collection that introduces the glove maker profession.
The hot springs at Harkány are unique in Europe. They bubble up from the ground from a depth of 50–70 metres at an average temperature of 62°C . In the medicinal baths there is a fully covered, a half-covered, and an open pool at a temperature of 34-38°C.
The wines of the Villány Wine Region are considered to be among the best in the Hungarian wine market. The first full origin protection system of Hungary was developed out here.
Stay in wellness hotel or at a vineyard.
