National Careers Week - help for your students

February 22, 2021

National Careers Week is coming up on 1st -6th March. With so much uncertainty and unknowns, for many young people and teachers this week may be a tough one for all.

Here are just a few resources that may be of help:

  • Discover! Creative Careers - will be providing teachers and career leaders with a range of videos and lesson plans to introduce students (key stages 3- 5) to careers in the creative industries. For example, those students thinking of a career in film and TV can take a guided tour of the world-renowned Pinewood Studios. Or find out what it’s like to work for Emmerdale, Framestore and BBC Sport. While students can also spend anything from 20 minutes to a whole day finding out about careers in Heritage, including libraries, museums, galleries and visual arts as well as history and art.
  • Speakers for Schools – can arrange for local business people and employers to speak to schools about getting into certain careers. It also offers a range of other opportunities to schools: Their Experience Programme connects young people without access to prestigious organisations to work experience placements and insight day opportunities; while their Enterprise Adviser Network, pairs senior business volunteers with senior business volunteers with schools and colleges to build employer engagement plans.
  • The Prince’s Trust – offers a range of support to young people of all ages, including a programme that helps young people get to know an industry that suits their personality, which includes free courses that will help them gain valuable experience.

Erik Szymonski is responsible for Careers, the PE curriculum and teaching NCFE Level 2 sport at Sutton Tuition and Reintegration Service (STARS), a pupil referral unit. He says:

"This year it has been more difficult than ever for young people but one thing that young people are excellent at is adapting to face challenge. This has enabled them to remain as passionate and determined as ever to achieve their career and educational goals.  Resources like these have helped to make this process easier, and keep them in touch with the real world of work".
