The Tokaj-Hegyalja grape and wine culture has a one-thousand year history. Declared the world’s first “closed wine region” by royal decree in 1737, it uses specialised processes and historic traditions for its wine making. The Tokaj Aszú, “the wine of kings”, is matured for three years in special barrels and is the region’s most famous wine.
Mád Synagogue is a rare example of beautiful and now rare Hungarian synagogue architecture. Situated on a hill overlooking the majestic vineyards of the Tokaj Hegyalja region, it is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in Hungary.
Eger is a famous historic place and the centre of the Eger wine region. It lies at the south-western foothills of the Bükk Mountains in the valley of the Eger Straem. Having a thousand years of history, this is an archiepiscopal centre with bath, museums and a number of restaurants.
The soft volcanic rhyolite tuff stone of the Eger hills is particularly suitable for carving a cellar. The largest number of cellars can be found in the famous Szépasszony-völgy (Valley of Beautiful Women). The oldest cellars were carved between the second half of the 16th century and 1777. The most respected and renowned wine of the Eger wine region is the Egri Bikavér (Eger Bull's Blood).
You will be based in a castle hotel in four or five star luxury. Both our hotels are set in a stunning, picturesque location with superb facilites and restaurants and unique arhitecture and furnishings.
