Situated in the Southern Alps of France, the Serre Chevalier valley is a less familiar name to non-French skiers. However, its 250 km of runs on north-facing slopes, with 80% lying above 2,000 metres, guarantee great snow for a long season. With so many slopes below the treeline, you can comfortably ski below the clouds even on a snowy day. There are good beginner areas in Villeneuve and Le Monetier while much of the rest of the pisted terrain is ideal for intermediates. Advanced skiers can tackle the powder in the high bowls at L’Eychauda and beneath the Pic de L’Yret, while everyone will enjoy cruising through the long, tree-lined pistes.
View piste mapThe historic town of Briançon, with its UNESCO-listed Vauban fortress and old cobbled streets is definitely worth exploring one afternoon and evening. More traditional evening activities include a visit to the Water Park 1326, skating at the Olympic ice rink, and bowling in Chantemerle.
Awarded our Sustainability Badge
Since 2006, Serre Chevalier ski resort has been aiming to develop the ski area sustainably with a policy that includes:working towards net zero by 2030; restricting any new development; and developing expertise to help combat the effects of climate change.
They have already re-wilded some areas, use hybrid piste-bashers and only useelectricity from renewable sources. At the same time they are increasing their own electricity production, powered solely by wind and sun. And of course, eco-friendly excursions such as ski-joering (with horses) and hotels with the Eco-Gite label are all part of the picture. We believe that they demonstrate how you can combine the joy of skiing with a desire to save the planet from man-made climate change.
To quote the resort manager, Patrick Arnaud, "We’re not doing this for Chevalier, we’re doing this for the planet. If all the resorts make this change, imagine the difference it would make.”*
