'I am like an embarrassing, proud parent clapping and cheering loudly!'

We interviewed one of our long-term tour managers, Caroline Johnston to get her perspective on life as a school music tour manager.

What is your background and how did you first come to work for Club Europe?

“I first came across Club Europe when I was a student. They were originally based over in South-east London where I am from and it was a friend’s mother who told me about it. I was doing a languages degree and so it was a perfect way to use and practice my languages, travel and earn some pocket money.”

What music experience have you had?

“Sadly my musical career ended a long time ago. I attended the Blackheath Conservatoire in London for piano and recorder lessons from an early age but then once I became a stubborn teenager my priorities changed! I have since dabbled in singing after joining various choirs and would love to take up the piano again.”

What do you like most about being a tour manager?

“I enjoy becoming a member of the group and working alongside everyone to make sure every aspect of the tour goes to plan. I love interacting with the children too; they can be very amusing at times! I also love seeing the end result of all the hard work and practice the groups put into their concerts. I am like an embarrassing, proud parent clapping and cheering loudly! I also have a lot a fun visiting some incredible, quirky, interesting places.”

Have you got any stand out moments of the tours you have been on so far?

“I have been fortunate to have traveled with a group to the wonderful Ghent Festival. It is such a great opportunity for them to get up on a professional stage and perform in front of a large responsive crowd. There is always so much going on and the atmosphere is so energetic - they get asked to come back every year! But I enjoy all the tours as I get to explore historic churches and cathedrals, sunny parks and gardens and off the beaten track towns and villages.”

What’s it like working for Club Europe?

“I’ve been working on and off for the company for the last 15 years; they can’t seem to get rid of me! Even when I have a full time job I make sure I do at least one tour a year - they are very flexible with me. They provide me with such concise and detailed packs and information that it is so easy to turn up and head off to wherever the tour is.

“They are very helpful and really know their stuff!”
