Classorama 2018 is a success

Alahree McDonell, our resident steel pan player, enjoyed a great day out on Friday 13th July with the Steel Pan Trust at the annual Classorama Competition which took place in its new location at Canon’s House Open Space in Croydon.

Classorama is the initiative of Kyron Akal, a specialist steelpan tutor and the competition has grown from strength to strength, attracting youth steelbands from as far as Leicestershire.

Bands from three categories competed for the coveted first place title which was taken by Kingsdale Foundation School, 4th time Secondary School winners, Manorfield Primary and in a new Borough Category, Haringey Steel Orchestra (pictured here).

Commenting on the day, Alahree said, “I was blown away by the standard of all the performances. It’s clear these bands have all invested in good quality instruments that are regularly tuned and have great tutors who are teaching the students about technique”.

This was something that was echoed by one of the judges, who commented: “Steelpan has spread far and wide since I started playing as a teenager but it’s as important to have a specialist pan tutor as it is to have a specialist violin teacher if you’re to get the most out of this incredibly versatile instrument”.

Club Europe are the only music tour operator with steel pan expertise and we appreciate that going on tour with steel pans is very different from travelling with any other kind of instruments.

If your steelband are interested in going away on tour either by themselves or with other ensembles please contact Alahree at Alahree.m@club-europe.co.uk or give her a call on 0208 8772 2868.
