The Channel island of Jersey is an island of discovery – somewhere a little way apart, a little bit different and ever so slightly exotic. Only a short flight away, Jersey is truly a unique dedstination for a educational school trip.
The island has played many roles, from a Viking stronghold to a valuable island outpost, fought for by the English and the French, to being occupied by Germany during World War II. Our trip focuses on the WW2 period, supporting and enhancing Key Stage 3 and 4 history.
There are many varied activities to experience and explore, including Stone Age dolmens and boat trips around the island.
Jersey may be a little island, but it's full of reminders that tell its big story.
The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to fall into enemy hands when they were occupied by Nazi Germany between 1940 and 1945. Explore unique wartime history and see the traces the five-year-long occupation left behind, from concrete defences, bunkers and fortifications to a network of underground tunnels. Visit historical sites or join a expert-led tour to cast light on this dark side of Jersey’s history.
Day 1
Arrive and settle into accommodation. Discover one of the island’s many beaches, just a short walk from your accommodation.
Day 2
In the morning: Delve deep into the Jersey’s Occupation story with a visit to the Jersey War Tunnels. In the afternoon: Get a new perspective of the island’s wartime history by exploring the dramatic coastline by boat. Alternatively, discover Jersey’s wild side and explore stories of survival with a local guide while discovering how locals foraged for food on the seabed during the Occupation.
Day 3
In the morning: Discover Jersey’s wartime history up close at The Channel Islands Military Museum. Housed in a German bunker right on the sea front, the museum was part of the Third Reich’s Atlantic sea defences. In the afternoon: At the War Tunnels, discover if you have what it takes in their escape rooms. Can you and your students solve the puzzle and escape the room? After an exhilarating escape, spend the afternoon at the beach relaxing or playing games.
Day 4
In the morning: Spend the morning exploring the award-winning Occupation Tapestry, housed in the Martime Museum. The tapestry was hand woven by islanders to depict life and hardship under military rule. The tapestry’s 13 panels were created from the memories and stories of islanders who experienced it first-hand. Then step back in time and experience life in Regency Jersey at 16 New Street. A lovingly restored property that will transport you and your students to a time of elegance, when gentlemen smoked clay pipes, ladies drank priceless tea and the threat of French invasion was always a hot topic of conversation. In the afternoon: Wander the streets and markets of St Helier, Jersey’s main town. Don’t miss the Central Market which has served the island for over 200 years. In the evening: Explore WWII bunkers, whose doors are usually closed to the public, on an evening tour to discover how Jersey was turned into an ‘impregnable fortress’ by the third Reich..
