Head of Physics at St Dunstan’s College in south-east London, Ben Ford has just returned to the UK after a very successful Covid-free half term Science trip to CERN with his Physics students.
“Despite the hoops we had to jump through to get there, our trip to CERN was hugely worth it. The S’Cool workshops at CERN really are the best way to get students to comprehend the magnitude of Physics.
“Our students did two workshops: The Cloud Chamber and Super Conductor. They got to use liquid nitrogen which they can’t do in school. The workshops and the tour we did the previous day really helped them to see the awe and wonder of the subject.
“The workshops tie in directly with Year 12 material. We also had some Year 11s with us and this was a great way to entice them to take up Physics for A level. Some of them have already said they will, which is great.
“In terms of Covid, it was pretty straightforward. We only had one student who wasn’t double jabbed, who had to do a test the day before. We had to wear masks during the flight and the hostel also asked us to wear them in communal areas.
“Our trip included a fascinating visit to the UN Building. We got to watch a conference that was in session from the viewing gallery. There was also a great exhibition in the library on the history of the UN, which was very useful for students to learn about the League of Nations.
“I’ve had some lovely messages from parents since being back, thanking me for the work I put in to make this trip happen.
“I can only say, it was definitely worth it!”
