This invigorating field studies trip to Andorra explores the stunning and accessible glaciated landscape of the central Pyrenees. Based in Soldeu, students can easily experience a range of glacial landforms, see and measure evidence of various processes of glacial erosion and deposition, and can witness how a glaciated landscape is being used and managed.
Other fascinating topics can be incorporated, including fluvial landscapes at Valle d’Incles and human geography in the villages, resorts and capital city of Andorra la Vella.
Our school travel groups are taught by a fantastic expert who is a former manager at a UK Field Studies Centre with over 30 years’ experience teaching field studies.
This unique tour is targeted at A-level studies, but should there be younger Geography students interested in exploring this awe-inspiring destination, the itinerary can be adapted.
Day 1
Depending on arrival time, transfer to the mountain pass of Port d’Envalira for a short orientation walk -initial familiarisation with glacial landscapes and acclimatisation to altitude.
After dinner, class session introducing the geographical enquiry model, setting hypotheses and planning the trip field work.
Day 2
Full day of fieldwork at up to 2500m altitude in Port d’Envalira. Explore glacial erosional processes and landforms, quantitative fieldwork studying striations and composition of moraine.
Day 3
Walk to the Valle d’Incles and study traditional and modern land uses in Andorra. Vegetation sampling, infiltration measurements on hay meadows and a ski run. This can be adapted to suit the group’s focus.
Day 4
Return to Valle d’Incles but continue onwards into a hanging valley to the Cabana de Sorda cirque and back. Stop to study lateral moraines and roche moutonnées. Beautiful sightseeing with classic geographical features.
Day 5
Departure. If returning via Barcelona, opportunity to see terminal moraine and glacio-fluvial deposits in the down valley of Andorra la Vella city.
A mountain pass, used in both the Tour de France and Vuelta a España cycling races.
The beautiful Val de Incles Valley is a characteristic U-shaped glacial valley with a rich heritage and natural flora and fauna.
A challenging but rewarding climb to see one of the finest examples of a cirque/corrie in Andorra.
Andorra’s capital is cradled in a green valley at 1,023m.
Groups stay in 2 star or 3 -star hotels in the area of the village resort Soldeu.
The most pleasant time of year to come to Europe is between May and September; you may wish to consider this when planning your tour. Summer temperatures across Europe range from 18-35 degrees Celsius. European cities in winter can also offer many interesting cultural experiences that you may enjoy.
We can send you mini-brochures to hand out at school and a PowerPoint presentation for assemblies and parent’s meetings you may wish to hold. We also have an interactive promotional poster you can put up on walls and noticeboards. This will make it easier for you to get your students excited about your plans.
We have developed an easy to use tour management portal - My Club Europe - just for our customers. With our portal you can manage all the promotion, payments, scheduling, passenger lists and much more with a click of a button. Click here to find out more.
