A trip to north west Scotland with its rich wildlife and dramatic scenery has so much to offer. Our trip to Ullapool focuses on glacial landscapes, hydrology, biosphere and rural regeneration, and is targeted at A-level and Scottish Higher field courses. However, the itinerary can be tailored to the needs of the group with further study of coastal landscapes and tourism, for example. There is also an exciting opportunity to discuss the impact of the North Coast 500 with local stakeholders.
The programme incorporates a daily class session in order to evaluate the day’s fieldwork. Our educational school tour (hyperlink) groups are taught by a fantastic expert who is a former manager at a UK Field Studies Centre with over 30 years’ experience teaching field studies.
Day 1
Transfer to Ullapool. Explore the village’s beach, at the distal end of a periglacial alluvial fan complex; it contains a wonderful variety of rock types. Introduction to the course.
Day 2
Excursion to Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve and continue to Quinag mountain where students walk into the main corrie and study macro and micro features of glacial erosion.
Day 3
The day is spent in Ullapool. Use qualitative and quantitative fieldwork methods to assess the impact of the North Coast 500 rebranding on the local economy. Talks and interviews with a variety of local stakeholders including Highland Council and the John Muir Trust.
Day 4
Choose between today’s fieldwork studies – carbon cycle and soils, hydrology and water cycle or glacial deposits study.
Day 5
Depart for school.
We are also developing a Geography trip to West Wales to include river, coastal and glacial options, targeted at both GCSE and A Level. Groups will be close to the picturesque, seaside town of Aberaeron on the Welsh coast. Please ask us for more details.
Groups are based in a hostel in Ullapool. There are also accommodation options for smaller groups in nearby villages.
We can send you mini-brochures to hand out at school and a PowerPoint presentation for assemblies and parent’s meetings you may wish to hold. We also have an interactive promotional poster you can put up on walls and noticeboards. This will make it easier for you to get your students excited about your plans.
The most pleasant time of year to come to Europe is between May and September; you may wish to consider this when planning your tour. Summer temperatures across Europe range from 18-35 degrees Celsius. European cities in winter can also offer many interesting cultural experiences that you may enjoy.
Yes, there are many advantages to this. One is that greater numbers sign up which means a lower tour price per student. Another is that a diverse (two-subject) itinerary can broaden the horizons of both ‘groups’ though, of course, we can create separate agendas for each if preferred.
