The island of Sicily, just off the southern ‘toe’ of Italy, gives geography students the perfect opportunity to see so many of their coursework topics outside the classroom. Mount Etna is Europe’s most active volcano, and groups can visit it with an expert local guide. There’s more to explore, including the majestic Alcantara Gorges where the local ecosystem and water erosion can be explored, and a boat trip will help identify coastal management while making an enjoyable trip in itself. Each trip to Sicily is tailor-made to your students’ needs and learning in accordance with your chosen exam board and in consultation with our geography specialist.
Day 1
Flight to Catania and transfer to Giardini Naxos. Enjoy an afternoon boat trip to start to explore the area.
Day 2
Morning visit up Mount Etna by cable car and 4x4 minibus to reach the summit, with a guide. In the afternoon proceed for the visit of the Alcantara Gorges.
Day 3
Departure for the visit of the Tindari Lakes and see the 1.5km tongue of sand reaching into the sea. A guide will accompany you for the day. Proceed for the visit of Messina Straits to learn about the ecosystem here.
Day 4
Depart the hotel for a morning visit to some towns at the foot of Mount Etna, such as Zafferana Etnea and Linguaglossa. Continue along the Sicilian coast passing through the small fishing villages of the Cyclops Riviera. Transfer to Catania Airport for afternoon flight.
Take a cable car and 4x4 minibus ride to the summit with your guide.
See the mighty outcrops of rock known as the Faraglioni, created by lava from Mount Etna.
Walk along the floor of this deep and impressive lava canyon, with an expert guide.
At its narrowest point of only 1.9 miles, the Strait has its own unique ecosystem created by intense tidal currents.
Our groups stay in Giardini Naxos, a lovely resort with shops, pizzerieas and gelato shops galore. A typical hotel would be the 3 star Hotel Baia degli Dei, located right by the sea with a view over to Mount Etna. Students are accommodated in multi-bedded rooms and staff in twins.
The most pleasant time of year to come to Europe is between May and September; you may wish to consider this when planning your tour. Summer temperatures across Europe range from 18-35 degrees Celsius. European cities in winter can also offer many interesting cultural experiences that you may enjoy.
We carefully listen to your curriculum needs and tailor-make your itinerary to achieve the best possible result.
We agree a three-stage process so that payments can be staggered to make it easier for parents.
