'The trip to the UN was so motivating that it has made me reconsider my university courses'

March 08, 2022

Will, a Year 12 student from a school in south east London gives a first hand account of his half term Science trip to CERN.

From the minute that we arrived in Geneva, it was clear that this was going to be a very good trip. After dropping the bags at the hostel, we were given a little bit of time to go and explore the city. Many of us found the freedoms on this trip very refreshing, offering a good contrast from other trips which did not offer the same level of freedom.

Geneva was a truly amazing place with vast amounts of history and a public transport network that trumped anywhere else I had ever been to. After this, we reconvened at the hostel and then went out to an authentic lakeside restaurant where we sampled the traditional Swiss food fondue, which was very nice. After sleeping in the hostel, we made our way to CERN where we had a tour of the facility.

During the tour, we were able to see previous particle accelerators, which I found very inspiring as we were able to see first hand the equipment that was being used to make new discoveries.

The trip to the UN was so motivating that it has made me reconsider my university courses to potentially include something like politics or international relations.

That evening, we went to a bowling alley which was of course excellent fun, although I am sure that all of us could say that we needed to brush up on our bowling skills.

The next day, we returned to CERN where we had the opportunity to complete some very fun practicals. In these practicals, we used things such as dry ice and liquid nitrogen, which was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity and was very enjoyable.

Both practicals that we completed had a lot of very interesting theory behind it which made completing the practicals very rewarding as we were able to relate that theory to real world results.

Overall, I found the CERN trip amazing and really good fun.

I am sure that all students who attended will agree with me in thanking Mr Ford and Dr Qadiri for giving up their time to run it.
